How to Claim a Medication Refund: Filing an EG Assist Reimbursement

Tabla de contenidos

Table of Contents

If you have an EG Assist health policy in Colombia, understanding how a medication refund works can help you recover eligible prescription expenses and avoid delays. EG Assist offers visa-compliant health coverage tailored to expats in Colombia, with plans that include medical assistance, accident and illness coverage, hospitalization, and any sort of medical prescriptions that may come with an urgent health-related complication.

This guide explains how to file a medication reimbursement claim, what documents you will need, and how to submit your claim correctly. Before submitting a claim, make sure that you understand that the only variation between health policy plans is the dollar limit of coverage, not the medical reason for the prescription. Make sure your prescription, original pharmacy invoice, and proof of payment all meet those stated requirements before you request reimbursement.

What Is a Medication Refund (Prescription Reimbursement) with EG Assist?

A medication refund is a reimbursement request for eligible prescription medicines paid out of pocket during a covered medical emergency abroad. Medical benefits are coordinated and authorized by EG Assist’s Assistance Services Center and Medical Department, and are provided only for emergencies, within the voucher validity period, and subject to the exclusions, conditions, and coverage limits established in the chosen assistance plan.

Eligible prescription medicines may arise from covered events such as:

    •   Accidents
    •   Acute, unforeseeable, and/or non-pre-existing illnesses
    •   Emergency stabilization of chronic or pre-existing conditions (only if included in the voucher)
    •   Pregnancy complications covered under the plan terms
    •   Emergency dental treatment due to trauma or infection

In most cases, Health Policy Beneficiaries should contact the EG Assist Assistance Center before purchasing medication or seeking treatment, unless it is a life-threatening emergency. Reimbursement requests apply only to medications prescribed by the authorized treating doctor and approved through the Assistance Services Center. To submit a claim, Health Policy Beneficiaries must provide the original pharmacy receipt, proof of payment, a medical report indicating the diagnosis, and the medical prescription.

When Can You Make a Medication Reimbursement Claim?

As an EG Assist customer,  you can request a medication reimbursement when the medication is tied to an eligible medical event, prescribed by the attending doctor through the EG Assist Assistance Services Center, and previously authorized under your plan. EG Assist states that medication costs are covered only within the limits of the contracted plan, so reimbursement is not automatic.

Before seeking medical attention or paying out of pocket, contact the EG Assist Emergency Center, unless you are facing an emergency or urgent situation. Unauthorized expenses may not be reimbursed. If approved, you must support your claim with original purchase receipts, the medical report or diagnosis, and the prescription or medical formula. Please note that EG Assist does not cover medication expenses related to pre-existing conditions, even if diagnosed by the attending doctor authorized through an Assistance Services Center.

What Documents Do You Need for a Medication Refund?

To support a medication reimbursement request with EG Assist, prepare clear, complete documents before submitting your claim. EG Assist states that prescribed medication reimbursement may require the original purchase receipt, the medical report or diagnosis, and the medical formula or prescription issued for the authorized treatment. Missing these documents may result in non-reimbursement.

You may also need your EG Assist voucher or assistance number, full name, passport or identification number, contact details, and bank information for payment. EG Assist’s assistance protocol asks Health Policy Beneficiaries to provide their full name, passport number, assistance number, location, phone number, and a description of the medical issue when contacting the Assistance Center.

How Can You Avoid Delays with Your Refund?

To avoid delays with a medication refund, treat every purchase like a formal insurance claim. Contact EG Assist before non-emergency treatment, confirm that the medication is connected to an authorized medical event, and ask what documents they require before you pay. Use the same name shown on your policy and passport, and check that the pharmacy invoice lists the date, medication, amount, and payment method clearly.

Scan or photograph every document in good lighting, including the prescription, medical report, original receipt, and proof of payment. Submit the claim as soon as possible, and keep copies of all emails, WhatsApp messages, and reference numbers. If EG Assist asks for missing information, respond quickly. Small errors, incomplete receipts, or unauthorized purchases can slow down reimbursement or lead to rejection under your plan.

Step-by-Step to Request a Medication Refund through EG Assist

To request a medication refund with EG Assist, you should follow the correct authorization and reimbursement process from the beginning. The pharmacy or medication supplier will not approve the refund directly. Instead, EG Assist reviews the claim based on your policy conditions, plan limits, medical authorization, and supporting documents. The safest approach is to contact EG Assist before paying for non-emergency medication, to confirm whether the expense may be covered, and to keep all documents related to the prescription and purchase.

Step 1: Report the Emergency to the EG Assist Assistance Center

You, a family member, or a travel companion must call the EG Assist Assistance Center to report the emergency. If no one was able to call beforehand due to the nature of the emergency, a valid justification must be provided within 48 hours of the incident. Failing to do so results in automatic loss of any right to claim.

Step 2: See the Authorized Doctor and Get a Prescription

Attend the clinic, teleconsultation, or hospital designated by EG Assist. Only prescriptions issued by a doctor authorized through the Assistance Center qualify for reimbursement. Medications purchased outside of an open case or through self-medication are excluded.

Step 3: Pay Out of Pocket and Keep All Original Documents

If EG Assist does not pay the pharmacy directly, pay out of pocket and hold on to: the original invoice (electronic or printed), the stamped prescription, the medical report or diagnosis, and proof of payment. All documents must show your name, date, drug name, quantity, and cost.

If EG Assist does not pay the pharmacy directly, pay out of pocket and hold on to the original invoice.

Step 4: Complete and Submit the Reimbursement Claim

Download and fill out the EG Assist Reimbursement Form from the link below, which covers all claim types: medical expenses, medications, transfers, lost or delayed luggage, and death of beneficiary. Include your case number, traveler information, a brief account of what happened, and the supporting documents required for your specific claim type. Once complete, email everything to refunds@egassist.com along with your full medical history and all invoices. After submitting your claim, confirm that it has been sent by messaging +57 1 9163199 via WhatsApp.

Step 5: Provide Your Bank Details

In the reimbursement form, authorize the account where you want the refund deposited.

Colombian account: A bank certification issued no more than 3 months ago is sufficient.

International account: Download and fill out the International Payment Form from the link below with your bank details, SWIFT/BIC code, and any country-specific requirements (IBAN for Europe, ABA routing for the US/Canada, CLABE for Mexico, etc.).

EG Assist will process your reimbursement request within business hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30–17:00.

Why Your Medication Refund May Be Denied?

Medication reimbursements with EG Assist follow strict General Conditions, and claims can be refused for several common reasons:

    • No prior authorization – you purchased the medicine without first opening a case with the Assistance Center (except in a certified emergency or urgent situation).
    • Excluded items – vitamins, OTC drugs, cosmetics, or medication for chronic or preventive treatment are outside policy coverage.
    • Non-covered event – the prescription is linked to a pre-existing condition, elective procedure, or routine check-up.
    • Paperwork issues – the original factura, stamped prescription, medical report, or proof of payment is missing, illegible, altered, or filed after the 30-day deadline.
    • Plan limit exceeded – the cost surpasses the monetary cap of your selected plan.

If EG Assist denies your claim, request the written reason, correct any fixable issues, and resubmit within the stated timeframe.

To Sum Up: What You Need to Know to Request a Medication Refund with EG Assist

To request a medication refund with EG Assist, the most important thing is to follow the authorization process correctly and keep all required documents. Medication reimbursement depends on the medical event, the plan conditions, and prior approval through the Assistance Services Center.

    • Medication refunds apply only to eligible prescriptions linked to a covered emergency medical event with prior authorization.
    • Health Policy Beneficiaries should contact the EG Assist Assistance Center before seeking treatment or purchasing medication, except in emergency or urgent situations.
    • Reimbursement requests require supporting documents, including the prescription, medical report, electronic receipt (factura), and proof of payment.
    • Medication related to pre-existing conditions is not covered under the prescription medication benefit.
    • Coverage limits depend on the assistance plan purchased and the terms stated on the voucher of said plan.
    • Missing documents, unauthorized purchases, or non-covered medical events may result in refund denial.
