Colombia's Social Security, Travel Health Policy

These are the most commonly asked questions about EG Assist Can’t find what you’re looking for? Chat with our team, we’re here to help you.

What is the difference between medicina prepagada and the EG Assist private health policy?

Medicina Prepagada is a supplemental health plan for Colombian residents that legally requires an active EPS affiliation, operates on monthly payments, and lacks mandatory repatriation coverage unless expensive add-ons are added. In contrast, EG Assist is an independent private health policy specifically tailored to satisfy Resolution 5477 for Colombian visa applications. It requires no EPS enrollment, includes mandatory medical and funeral repatriation, and allows upfront purchase for 1, 2, or 3 years to match your full visa duration at a lower total cost.

What happens if an M-Retirement visa holder affiliates with the public health system after approval?

If an expat joins the public health system while holding an M-Retirement visa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will flag the violation during the renewal or reapplication process. The evaluating officer, checking the ADRES platform with the applicant’s cédula de extranjería, will deem the case inadmissible and demand official proof of disaffiliation before moving forward.

Can I use an EPS certificate if I am applying for a Colombian Retirement Visa?

Absolutely not. Under Article 77 of Resolution 5477, active affiliation with the domestic public social security system is explicitly prohibited for M-Retirement visa holders. Using a public health registration instead of a dedicated private plan will lead directly to your application being marked as inadmissible by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Why does the Colombian public health system (EPS) fail to satisfy visa guidelines?

The main reason is that the public system operates entirely under a regional, territorial contribution scheme. Because of this localized legal structure, it completely lacks the financial mechanisms and international logistics required to perform medical transfers or funeral repatriation across borders, which makes a private policy an immediate necessity.

Is an EPS certificate valid for a Colombian visa application in 2026?

No, a standard public health certificate from an EPS is generally not valid because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs enforces strict structural rules under Resolution 5477. When evaluating eps vs. private health policy requirements, the EPS option lacks critical international clauses, specifically full-risk coverage for death expenses and medical or funeral repatriation.

If I have a Type V – Visitor Visa (Example: Type V – Student Visa, Type V – Digital Nomad Visa), am I obliged to affiliate with a Colombian EPS?

No. Foreigners with category V visas are not required to join the Colombian health system. For these cases, it is mandatory to have a private health policy that complies with Resolution 5477, providing all-risk coverage within Colombia.

Why is an EPS not accepted as medical policy for a Colombian visa?

A Colombian EPS does not meet the specific requirements of Resolution 5477 of 2022, as it lacks mandatory services such as international coverage and medical or funerary repatriation.

Is EPS in Colombia valid as a health policy for the visa?

No, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not accept an EPS as a valid health policy because it does not include mandatory coverages, such as repatriation, required for visa processing.

What are the differences between a private health policy and an EPS?

Health policy companies offer extended benefits much more complete than an EPS. In addition to being mandatory for visa procedures, it is a health plan with international healthcare coverage, funeral repatriation, hotel expenses for convalescence, compensation for missed flights and lost luggage, short-term disability health policy, and pre-existing conditions coverage, among other benefits.

What are the different types of health policies in Colombia?

A private health policy is a contract with a provider that ensures healthcare coverage for all people who plan to travel internationally. An EPS is a mandatory medical policy with coverage only in Colombia, which can be used by nationals and foreign residents with a foreign identification card (Cédula de Extanjería) who meet the conditions for this type of affiliation.

It is highly recommended that Retirement Visa applicants avoid enrollment, as an active status in the national system (ADRES) can lead to visa rejection or withdrawal.

What are the health policy requirements for obtaining a visa in Colombia?

To obtain a visa, applicants must present a policy that includes the amparos set by the Colombian government. These requirements include coverage for medical expenses due to accidents and illness, hospitalization, disability, maternity, and mandatory medical/funerary repatriation. The policy must remain active for the visa to remain valid and maintain legal status in the country.

EG Assist provides a specialized travel health policy designed for the Colombian visa process. As the trusted choice for expats, we deliver reliable, tailored coverage for digital nomads, retirees, and investors, guaranteeing your peace of mind from day one.
